Learning All About OtherAuthor

Stories

OtherAuthor is all about stories. We encourage people to write stories about anything: your everyday life(a blog), an awesome mystery no one has ever thought of, the perfect romance, a mind-bending sci-fi adventure, and so on.

Bringing Authors Together
The unique thing about OtherAuthor is our ability to bring people together. You can allow other people to write pages in your stories. So if you don't have time to write that perfect story, or if you're suddenly stricken with writer's block, other people can help!

Protection
Also, you can protect your stories, so you can specify if only you, special people on a list, or anyone can write in your story. There are also some other cool protections you can place on your stories. You can read more about these and other cool settings below.

Finishing A Story
After your story is complete, you can finish the story by clicking the 'Finish!' link in the Stories Tab in your account. Once this is done, no one can write any more pages for your story.

Pages

Every Story is made up of a bunch of pages. You can allow only you, special people on your list, or anyone to write pages in your story. It all depends on how your story is protected. Right now, pages are organized by oldest to newest. This means the oldest page in the story will be the first page.

Approving Pages
When you write a new page for a story(whether it's your story or another person's story), it may have to be approved by the author before you actually see it in the story. This all depends on how the story is protected.

Rejecting Pages
If someone writes a page for your story, and you hate it. You can reject the page and tell the author why you don't like it. This will remove it from your story, but a record of the page will be kept for story, in case later you like the page and want to add it to your story.

Just a side note: You can see all approved, pending, and rejected pages for your stories in the Stories Tab in your account.

Bookmarks

Bookmarks in OtherAuthor are just like normal bookmarks. You can leave a bookmark in a story and pick it up later. There's no limit to the amount of bookmarks you can have. You can also delete bookmarks once you're done with them. You have to be logged in to leave a bookmark.

Writing Pages in Other Stories

If you happen to read an good story, and you decide that you know exactly how the next part of the story should go, you can write the next page in the story! Depending on the security settings of the story, the author of the story may need to approve your page before it goes to the story. The author can also reject your page and tell you why they don't like it.

Story Settings & Protection

When you create a new story, you get to specify a few things about the story. Here's what they are:

Story Theme
You can pick the visual theme of the story, how the pages will look, etc. when you're creating the story. If you have a theme you would like us to add, let us know.

Writing Protection Settings
When you create your new story, you get to specify who can write pages for your story. You have 5 choices on who can write pages for your story:
  • Anyone, As Long as I approve it
This is the default setting. As soon as another user writes a page for your story, the page waits for you to approve it before it's added to the system. To see pages that are waiting for your approval, check the Stories Tab or the Summary in your account.
  • Only Me
This means that no one else can write pages for your story, no matter how hard they try.
  • Only people on the list, as long as I approve it
This means that only people who are on a special list can write pages for the story. You still have to approve these pages before they go onto your story. To add users to this list, click on the Stories Tab in your account, then click 'Story Settings' for a particular story, and there you can add users to the list.
  • Anyone on the list, I trust them :)
This means that only people who are on a special list can write pages for the story. Any page written by a user on your list will be added automatically to your story. To add users to this list, click on the Stories Tab in your account, then click 'Story Settings' for a particular story, and there you can add users to the list.
  • Anyone, I trust the whole world!
This is a little risky. This means that any user can write a page for you story, and it will automatically get added to your story. This is useful if your story is a discussion, forum, or something similar.
Reading Protection Settings
You can also set similar protections for the people who will be reading your stories.
  • Anyone, let the whole world read my story!
This is the default setting for reading. It means that anyone(including non-users, who are people who aren't logged in) can read you story.
  • Only the people on my list.
This means that only people who are on a special list can read your story. This is pretty useful for family blogs, journals, etc. To add users to this list, click on the Stories Tab in your account, then click 'Story Settings' for a particular story, and there you can add users to the list. Keep in mind, there is only one list per story. The same list is used for reading & writing for your story.
  • Only Me. This story is for my eyes only!
This one is pretty self-explanatory. Only you can read your story.
